Jungle Cave Systems

Actun Tunichil Muknal
(ATM) Cave

The Actun Tunichil Muknal, or Belize ATM Cave was discovered in 1989 and is one of Belize’s best preserved, archeological Mayan ceremonial sites. Nearly all of the cultural artifacts still remain in the cave up to this day.

On this tour you will trek along the ancient jungle and river trails of the ancient Mayans to their underground passageways then enter cave caverns that dates back over 2000 years during the classic era.

As you step into the cave, you will uncover the mysteries of the ancient Mayan Underworld. These enchanted caverns, once used as ceremonial centers, hold a wealth of history. Within them, you will discover burial chambers containing human remains, ceremonial vessels, and other cultural artifacts left behind by the ancients, providing a glimpse into their fascinating traditions and beliefs.

The Crystal Maiden

The Crystal Maiden Skeleton

The Crystal Maiden stands as the most renowned of the human remains discovered within the cave, captivating all who visit. This hauntingly beautiful skeleton belongs to a teenage girl, believed to have been a sacrifice to ancient Mayan rituals. Over time, the cave’s natural processes have encrusted her bones with a glittering, crystal-like coating, giving her an almost otherworldly allure. While she is the most famous, the main chamber holds several other skeletons, each bearing silent witness to the ancient ceremonies that once unfolded in this mystical underground realm. Broken pottery scattered as offerings is also place on stone altars in the cave.

To participate in this tour, you must be able to swim, be in relatively good physical shape, and not suffer from claustrophobia.

To reach the cave, you first need to take a 45-minute nature hike into the jungle, which includes three stream crossings and passes through the 6,700-acre Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve. Additionally, you will need to be prepared to get wet, not only during the hike but also while exploring the cave, as the entrance to the cave is flooded.
