Belize’s food scene is a vibrant fusion of its diverse cultures and rich heritage. You can find everything from delicious Belizean specialties to international dishes. Influences from Creole, Mestizo, Maya, and Garifuna traditions come together to create a cuisine that’s both flavorful and unique. The national dish Rice and beans pronounced as one word “Rice n Beans” is a main staple in Creole culture and consists of coconut milk white rice and red kidney beans. A choice of stewed meat, typically chicken, beef or fish and potato salad or coleslaw with fried ripe plantains would make up the rest of the dish.
Different regions of Belize are celebrated for their signature dishes. Savor Mestizo tamales or tangy escabeche on Ambergris Caye, relish fresh Mayan-style fish in San Pedro, or dive into the coconut-rich Garifuna hudut in Hopkins. In Punta Gorda, alongside Mayan caldo, a vibrant East Indian community offers authentic Indian cuisine. Cayo boasts a mix of Belizean, Lebanese, and Indian flavors, while Placencia and Caye Caulker shine with fresh seafood, including seasonal spiny lobster and conch.
Belize national dish is a big hit with visitors and so are some of the breakfast staples including fry jacks and Johnny Cakes. Fry jacks are crescent –shaped pieces of fried dough often served alongside eggs and beans. Johnny cakes are flattened, dense biscuits and goes well with almost anything.

One of the most unique drinks you can try in Belize is the seaweed shake. Made with dried seaweed, evaporated and condensed milk, cinnamon, and nutmeg, this concoction is extremely refreshing on a hot humid day. If you are looking for a little extra kick, some vendors also sell seaweed shake with a shot of brandy or local rum in it. Delicious!
