Belize is synonymous with good fishing. Well-traveled anglers place this exotic destination at the top of their “wish” lists. What makes Belize so appealing is the vast diversity of fishing grounds and the unique terrain where they are found. Belize is no ordinary fishing spot. Hundreds of square miles of prolific fishing grounds are teeming with fish of all sizes and species and a chance at the revered Grand slam -
a bonefish, tarpon and permit in one day.
Blue marlins, sailfish, tunas & wahoos cruise the waters outside the barrier reef and atolls while giant tarpons, permits, bonefish and Snooks roam the inner flats, island lagoons and rivers. The variety of different species as well as the numerous types of tackle used provides a wide selection of activities for both the novice and the expert fishermen. Serious anglers come from all over to fish the flats in Belize for tarpon, permits & bonefish. Bone fishing is good year-round and is found along the coast, offshore cayes and flats.
The popular spots are around Ambergris Caye, the Turneffe Islands and Glover's Reef Atoll. At Turneffe and Glover's the bonefishes are bigger. Ambergris Caye and Placencia are better for tarpon fishing.
The best permit fishing is found off the coast of beautiful Placencia. This area is known as the permit capital of Belize. Actually, the area is a heaven for tarpon, snook, barracuda, snappers, tunas and jacks as well. The average permit weighs 10 pounds or more, with trophy size in the 30-pound range. Fly-rodders should go with a nine weight rod, weight-forward floating line and a 12-pound leader. The best permit fishing is on the offshore shallow water flats. Fly fishing is the preferred method of fishing for permits.
Popular permit spots off the coast of Placencia include Channel Caye, Crow's Nest and Spider Caye, among many others. Saltwater tarpon fishing in the area is good at Tarpon Caye and Jack Caye. The Monkey River located only twenty five minutes by boat from
Placencia is superb for freshwater tarpon fishing in the spring.
Belize has plenty of fishing for everyone, including children. Kids will love bottom fishing for grunts, groupers, snappers and endless other species. And, if some of the family doesn't want to fish, they can enjoy a day of snorkeling and a picnic lunch on an offshore caye while others fish the nearby flats.
